Press Release: Trump Administration's Withdrawal from Climate Treaties Will Not Stop Global Action
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, DC - January 7, 2026
Climate change is real. Americans and people around the world are experiencing its accelerating impacts, and no political decision can change that fact.
Today’s announcement that the United States will withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), International Renewable Energy Agency, UN Oceans and UN Water, and several other treaties and organizations is a continuation of this administration's attacks on climate and clean energy work. It isolates America, damages our credibility, and ultimately hurts every American.
“Far from protecting America’s interests, leaving these agreements gives up our seat at the international decisionmaking table. We heard loud and clear at COP 30 in Brazil that the world is moving forward with decisive action that will allow them to seize the economic opportunities of a low carbon future, with or without the U.S. Today’s action only makes it more likely that we will be left behind,” said Max Frankel, Executive Director of SEEC Institute.
“SEEC Institute was created to find the biggest, most durable solutions possible, and we will continue to do just that alongside Members of Congress, state and local leaders, and civil society and private sector partners, regardless of any roadblocks.”
The United States Senate unanimously approved the UNFCCC in 1992 and we have been a global leader on climate action since. SEEC Institute and our partners are hard at work building a future with lower energy prices, cleaner air, healthier people, and a stable, productive economy.
